The
Edward H.
Cooley
Collection of whips made by Cecil Henderson
(Click on the photos for more pictures and
details about that specific whip)
Cecil Henderson's work is some of the most sought after and difficult
to find whips in the world. Cecil was the last of the famous Henderson
family of whipmakers (Stamped on the keeper of the stockwhips is "T.
Henderson & Sons") who provided some of the highest quality
kangaroo
hide whips in Australia for nearly 100 years. Cecil's whips were
used by countless famous performers and Hollywood movie stars
throughout the early 1900's including the Hassett family of
whipcrackers, Saltbush Bill, Will Rogers, Snowy Baker, silent
film star Col. Tim McCoy, and they were prominently used in Douglas
Fairbank's 1925 silent film success Don Q. Son of Zorro.
When
Cecil passed away in the early 1960's, he was in the process of making
a fancy 17 1/2ft stockwhip for Cooley (Cooley's 18th Henderson whip),
and some of the Henderson whips being sold in this collection were
likely some of the last whips that Henderson made before he died.
