T Henderson & Sons Crop

- This crop was made around 1950 -

This crop is 20 plait

Photos and story courtesy of Russell Schultz

Henderson Crop

This crop belonged to Russell Schultz's wife’s uncle Jack, and was made about 1950. When he died his wife asked Russell to repair the flapper as it was torn. She asked him to put a new flapper on it but he ended up just gluing it, because it has Henderson & Sons stamped on it.

Back in the 1940’s Jack was managing a cattle station (ranch) in western Queensland. Henderson used to send whips up to him to sell to the drovers when they came through with big mobs of cattle. Most of the whips were 16 strand 7 & 8ft long. About 1950 Jack bought a dairy farm over on the coast so he wrote to Henderson and told him he would not be able to sell whips for him any more. A few months later the crop turned up in the mail with a thank you letter. If I remember I think it was 20 strands.

"About 10 years ago I went out and saw John McMaster and I was telling him the story about this crop. Anyway his eyes lit up and he said just a minute and he wandered off into the house and came back with a Henderson crop he had there for repair. It was all 2 tone with “England My Home” plaited into it. I don’t know how many strands were in it, I would say it would have had to of been at least 24. It was a beautiful piece of work."  -Russell Schultz
